This volume and those in the following four lots were inscribed for Professor Josef Novák of Písek, and have come down to the current owner by direct descent. They were collected with the help of Janáček's beloved Kamila Stösslová, and inscribed by the composer when he visited her in Písek on 23-24 March 1928: see her letter to him of 5 March (Intimate letters, Leoš Janáček to Kamila Stösslová, edited by John Tyrrell, 2005, p. 220). The composer evidently had Kamila in mind as much as Novák. Sotheby's is grateful to John Tyrrell for his assistance with the cataloguing of these lots.
