First edition. The French expedition to the Iron Gates in Algeria in October 1839 rekindled war between the two nations, resulting in the French occupation of Algeria. Ferdinand Philippe, duke of Orléans, took part in the expedition.

This style of binding by Lortic, à caissons, is also recorded on a copy of the Contes of La Fontaine, bound by Lortic for Alexandre Bibesco (see Devaux, Dix siècles de reliure, 1977, p.258).
