Chancery folio (288 x 198mm.), a-l10 m8 [superscript]m8 n-p10 P10 q-t10 v8 x10 y-z8 aa12 bb-kk8 ll-mm6, 336 leaves, double column, 50 lines, gothic letter, 2- to 6-line initials supplied in red, initial-strokes and paraphs in red, "distinctio" numbers in upper corner of each leaf in manuscript, contemporary chained binding of pigskin over wooden boards with metal centre- and cornerpieces, chain attached to head of lower board, two clasps, lettered in manuscript on upper cover with the date 1482 and all three edges of the textblock with inventory number 88 on fore-edge, marginal stain on hh3, lacking one strap, some worming at beginning and end and in binding

"Monasterii Baumburg", inscription on a2 in an eighteenth-century hand, i.e. the Augustinians of Baumburg, Bavaria (the abbey was secularised in 1803, and all its 769 incunables went to the former Hofbibliothek in Munich); "Duplum" and "Inc. typ. no 2074", ink inscriptions on flyleaf, i.e. a duplicate from the Hofbibliothek (now part of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek), Munich, as their copy has the inscription "Inc. typ. no 1880" in the same hand on flyleaf, though this copy does not have the stamp "Bibliotheca regia monacensis"; Richard Caton of Liverpool, armorial bookplate

A contemporary chained binding from Bavaria dated 1482. For two other similar chained bindings, also from Bavaria, see lots 221 and 226. This very handsome "Kopfstempel" binding is Kyriss shop 154, Ingolstadt; the binder has been identified, subsequently to Kyriss, as Johannes Ewring.
