This is the first edition of the greatest and most profound song-cycle ever written. It is preserved in two separate volumes, untrimmed and in the original printed wrappers. The wrapper is also illustrated in the exhibition catalogue "Schubert 97", Die besondere Ausstellung 200. Geburtstag Franz Schuberts im Historischen Museum der Stadt Wien, (1997), page 95. Among the issue points shown in this copy are the publisher's numbers printed on 2 lines on the title to volume 1, and the presence of the contents page in volume 2 only.
