Condition
Original canvas. There are two very minor spots of paint loss in the upper left corner. A few minor hairline cracks along the right side of the upper edge and another along the upper half of the right vertical edge; otherwise the work appears in very good overall condition.
Under UV light there appear to be no signs of retouching.
Held in a simple wood frame with a canvas inset.

Cat, Tree and Bird was a composition to which John Craxton returned repeatedly in large and complex images of his last three decades. The subject reflected his love of rural Crete, and the handling of tessellated forms his deep appreciation of Byzantine mosaics.
