拍品資料及來源

Bench is an exceptionally rare example of Hayes' work in the medium of bronze. His oeuvre consists primarily of ceramics, having been initially inspired by the Neolithic Iron Age and Roman samien shards which he excavated in Wales during his time as a student. Seeking to push the boundaries of materials in order to achieve certain finishes and textures, Hayes uses methods which are slightly beyond his control and incorporate an element of randomness- such as leaving pieces in the Cornish sea bed in order to oxidise the surface or using clays which explode or crack at will in the kiln in a relatively accidental fashion. This element of external involvement is present in Bench, as it is meant to be used as a place of seated reflection, the rich patination of the bronze slowly changing through continual use. Captivated by artefacts and objects from other cultures and other times, Hayes spent a large part of a decade travelling extensively and the present work recalls his visit to an African village, where he was silently observed by a group of villagers.
