Jacques de Sainte-Beuve est chargé, dès 1641, par Richelieu de rédiger une théologie morale. Il est ensuite nommé en Sorbonne professeur royal de théologie. Ses travaux seront publiés en partie, à sa mort, par son frère Jérôme.
Louis Boucherat, catholique fervent, succède à Le Tellier comme chancelier et est chargé d'appliquer le fameux édit de Fontainebleau, révocant l'édit de Nantes.
