The inclusion of the parrot specifies that the present image embodies the benevolent nature of Devi as opposed to her fearsome aspect. The parrot signifies her role as an enchantress who charms the hermit God Shiva into the role of a householder. For this reason the parrot has very strong sexual and romantic connotations in Indian iconography.
