Bhils were a tribe who inhabited the forested regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan. As inhabitants of the wild they clearly excited popular imagination and are often encountered as a subject in paintings from Mughal and later provincial ateliers.

For an earlier, Mughal illustration of Asavari Ragini depicted in the form of a Bhil woman, see T. Falk & M. Archer, Indian Miniatures in the India Office Library, London, 1981, no. 54, p. 371.

Condition

Good overall condition. Light staining to lower right foreground, clearly visible in catalogue illustration. A few of the outlines, for example the breasts of the seated woman at center, may have been re-drawn. The overall background color is more yellowish rather than the ivory tone seen in the catalogue illustration. This lot is exhibited in a temporary frame.
