The illustration portrays the bustling scene at a village water well. Ladies gather around the well filling their water vessels and filling up on current gossip. In the foreground a princess on a stallion is offered a bowl of water by an attendant while on the left an old woman quenches her thirst, drinking from her cupped palms.
The delicately rendered forms, finely patterned garments and careful attention paid to detail are hallmarks of the Mughal School. Compare the facial types with portraits of courtesans and ladies from the same period, see T. Falk & M. Archer, Indian Miniatures in the India Office Library, London, 1981, nos. 179, 182, 203 & 214, pp. 423, 428-29.
