The decoration of this box copies that on the toilet services delivered by François-Thomas Germain for Joseph I of Portugal between 1756 and 1762; see Christiane Perrin, François-Thomas Germain, orfèvre des rois, pp. 158-59, which illustrates one of a pair of matching circular boxes now in the Musée National d'Art Ancien, Lisbon.  An oblong box from one of the services, signed and dated 1762, appeared on the Paris art market in the Julia Beau sale, Paris, May 7, 1877; the offered box may have been copied from the original shortly thereafter.
