Artist's Inscription:
We refuse to be like the Huannan Prince’s trailing dogs, and are willing to nibble and sip in the flowers’ shadows. When we crow we will make the world listen, and inspire their kind hearts to be diligent. (In clerical script) In sketching from life, the key lies in suppleness and vigor and in the expansiveness of brush and ink. Only such masters as Xu Xi and Zhou Shaogu (Zhou Zhimian, 1521-?) secret of this art, which is beyond the ability of those without an insouciant spirit. In spring of the jiayin year (1914), painted and inscribed in Shanghai by Lianfu Lu Hui of Wujiang.
