carved from a massive boulder, the animal naturalistically depicted reclining with its legs tucked beneath the full rounded body and tail flicked to one side, the head turned to the left to face its hind quarters and its horns curled back to its spine, the stone of rich green colour, with some russet veining and opaque celadon mottling

Condition
The buffalo's right ear chipped off and missing (approximately 22mm by 26mm), otherwise in good general condition.
Some surface wear, primarily to underside and crown of head, and some pitting or very shallow chips, primarily to the lower back.
Yellowish veining and mottling to the stone, primarily to the top of the neck, across the lower back, the underside of the front right leg and to the tail, with other minor stone flaws.

臥牛在中國繪畫裡代表寧靜致遠﹑柔能克剛，歌詠田園生活的悠然自得。同時，水牛作為老子（生於西元前604年）的座騎，隱喻著道家的哲學思維。以動物為題的雕刻多半用於禮祭或葬儀，純為清翫而作之動物塑像實屬鳳毛麟角。
中國玉雕可追溯至史前時代，本品可謂箇中翹楚——青玉瑩瑩﹑栩栩如生，其形優美傳神，內斂含蓄，線條曲折有力彷彿雷霆，形制材料兼美，難能可貴。
與本品可相比較之碧玉臥牛曾集珍於數個知名收藏，據稱多半來自圓明園，比如Pelham收藏一作例，2009年5月20日售於梳士巴利Woolley and Wallis，編號388。 另有兩件作例寶蓄吳爾夫慈善基金會（Woolf Charitable Trust），一件得自Jacob Goldschmidt收藏，曾展於《Austellung Chinesischer Kunst》，東亞藝術博物館及柏林普魯士藝術學院，柏林，1929年，編號1085﹑另一件則屬Somerset de Chair、Eckstein及Lionel de Rothchild男爵舊藏，曾兩度售於倫敦蘇富比，1937年4月19日，編號47及1948年12月9日，編號111。Oscar Raphael收藏一作例現貯劍橋費茲威廉博物館，圖刊於林政昇，《The Immortal Stone》，劍橋，2009年，圖版36。另一作例先後出自Alexander Ionides及Hotchis收藏，1954年5月20日售於倫敦蘇富比，編號101。James Cromwell夫人收藏一作例亦曾售於紐約佳士得1983年11月30日，編號275，後經Leona M. Helmsley收藏於紐約佳士得再度出售，2008年3月19日，編號436。
