The brushpot is in very good condition with the exception of a 4 x 2mm., shallow flake to the edge of the foot. It should be noted that the stone is of a slightly darker green tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest.

本品山石底部掏槽，光暗對比鮮明，具深邃感，營造世外桃源之境。此「山中放牧」圖以高浮雕勾勒，畫面充滿皇室嚮往之田園氣息。筆筒為文房必備之物，既實用又可賞玩,掌中乾坤排解宮廷生活繁文縟節之瑣碎。本品質料珍貴、工雕細琢、綴飾華麗，令人心馳神往。

此作構圖如一幅捲軸水墨畫，隨筆筒轉動一幕幕宜人景色盡入眼簾，引領觀者遊山玩水。

何鴻卿爵士藏一相關作例，現借展於倫敦大英博物館，刊於 Jessica Rawson，《Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing》，倫敦，1995年，圖版29：18。據 Rawson 所述，該作工匠裁飾時尤以雕刻手法締造繪畫效果。其他知名博物館及私人收藏玉筆筒包括：台北故宮博物院藏一碧玉作例，刻有智賢高士游樂於山間洞窟，及倫敦維多利亞與艾伯特博物館藏一高士圖筆筒，同錄於Geoffrey Wills，《Jade of the East》， 紐約，1972年，圖版120、121、126；鮑氏典藏一作例，圖刊於Pierre-F.
