the flattened circular body with gently convex panels to each side, well-painted in inky tones of cobalt blue with some heaping and piling, with an elaborate medallion of interlaced ruyi heads enclosing trefoils and linked by demi-florets, superimposed on radiating lappets centered on a ring of inward pointing petals, all within a band of scrolling leaves with thin undulating stems between double line borders, the upper bulb painted with a slender floral scroll of alternating asters and carnations between further double lines, the ribbed strap handles with shaped terminals enclosing stylized floral sprays, all raised on a low rectangular foot, wood stand (2)

Condition
There is a single hairline crack running approximately 1 1/4 in., 3 cm from the rim and a very small glazed-over crack on the inside of the rim. There is also a very fine discolored hairline in the glaze on top of one handle, where it meets the neck.

明朝初期,出現帶有波斯風格之御瓷。當中之抱月瓶,屬永樂和宣德時期深受中外皇室青睞之造型。是次抱月瓶,造工精巧,設計獨特,將中國工藝和波斯風格揉合得天依無縫。永樂之瓶,大小稍有不一,常見瓶頭微鼓、沿瓶口稍稍漸向內縮,足短、呈橢圓狀。相類列子,可見於珠山出土、明朝御窯址廢堆的抱月瓶,見《景德鎮出土明初官窯瓷器》展出圖錄,鴻禧美術館,台北,1996年,品號65。另有一相類之瓶,藏於東京的日本梅澤紀念館,載於《世界陶磁全集》,卷14,東京,1976年,圖版144; 另有一列錄於《明清瓷器鑒定》,香港,1993年,頁21,圖版30; 第四只例瓶屬Mount Trust Collection所藏,並曾於1970年在倫敦維多利亞及亞爾伯特博物館中展出,載於《 The Mount Trust Collection of Chinese Ceramics 》展覽圖錄,倫敦,1970年,品號83,此瓶隨後於倫敦佳士德1983年4月19日售出,拍品編號20。芸芸的例瓶中,還包括售於香港蘇富比1981年11月24日的拍品編號80;和見售於香港佳士德2004年11月1日的拍品編號826;另有兩個瓶身稍高的例子,其一見售於香港蘇富比1990年5月15日,拍品編號25;另一則為仇炎之所藏,售於香港蘇富比1981年5月19日,拍品編號408,瓶身正中飾有團花,附環以紋飾,屬常見於宣德時期之款式。
此瓶身之紋飾亦見於台北故宮博物館中另一瓶身較小、瓶頭較圓大之抱月瓶,刊於《明代初年瓷器特展》圖錄,台北,1982年,編號9。另外,類同紋飾也見於宣德時期抱月瓶之其中一面,而另一面則中間飾有太極圖,傍有纏枝花卉紋,見藏於倫敦大英博物館大衛德基金會藏,載於R. L. Hobson 《A Catalogue of Chinese Pottery and Porcelain in the Collection of Sir Percival David》,倫敦,1936年,圖版CXVII; 和另一只屬仇炎之藏,見載於《Exhibition of Blue-Decorated Porcelain of the Ming Dynasty》,費城美術館,美國費城,1949年,編號69,此瓶及後售於香港蘇富比1980年11月25日,拍品編號7。
此瓶之型,應為仿當時中東地區之陶品或金屬器型之作,現惟缺傳世之實例。Margaret Medley在其著作中有提給抱月瓶器型之來源,刊於《Bulletin of the Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong》中的‘Islam and Chinese Porcelain in the 14th and Early 15th Centuries’一文,品號6,1982-4年;而刊於《Aus der Welt der Islamischen Kunst. Festschrift fur Ernst Kuhnel》,柏林,1959年,John Alexander Pope所著的 ‘An Early Ming Porcelain in Muslim Style’中錄有一只器型較大的綬帶銅瓶,瓶口型似蒜頭,圖版2A和2B,為Eumorforpoulos所藏,售於倫敦蘇富比1940年6月5日,拍品編號72,現存於美國華盛頓弗里爾藝術館。
此瓶身之寶相花紋呈幾何特色,既莊嚴,亦抽象,為中國本土瓷器設計造型中甚為罕見。加上環扣線條之間帶有纏枝特色,應為受中東文化薰陶啟發下之創作。仍此瓶尚保留傳統中國藝術之髓,如瓶柄之小纏枝花簇和沿瓶頸之纏枝花層。然紫菀和石竹相交之纏枝花紋實屬少見。花類紋飾婉柔雅緻,瓶身之星環,風度端儼,一剛一柔,調協相稱。
