  • Rhinoceros horn
the tall horn superbly carved in high relief as a pair of hawks by a gnarled tree with branches growing from the sides of a mountain ledge, several entwined branches forming the handle, and a few leafy twigs extending over the rim, one hawk perched on a small branch that extends round the side, the other in flight with legs drawn up and wings outstretched, the feathers finely incised, inscribed with a five-character inscription reading fang Xuanhe biyi, followed by an oval seal reading Zhi Sheng and a square seal reading You Kan, the material of a honey tone darkening towards the tip and with an extremely smooth patina, fitted wood stand (2)

Condition

The libation cup with a U-form section of the rim broken and restuck and carved in a manner that successfully integrates it with its naturalistic form, two short splits at the edge of the foot and adhesive residue and remnants of varnish or lacquer on the base. There are chips to one eagle's wing and tail feathers.

拍品資料及來源

杯上刻文「倣宣和筆意」,顯示宋徽宗之書畫對此匠人作品之影響。宣和書畫的主題多為花鳥,一幅《御鷹圖》知名度極高,描繪白鷹隻身棲於木上。此作上之雙鷹,其雄壯之姿,與徽宗所繪相仿,使整體設計力度輝煌。枯枝亦更能彰顯主體的重要性,整體空間的配置造出特別的創意感。此類風格常見於宣和之作,作者必是時常欣賞揣摩宋徽宗作品。「鷹」乃狩獵隻鳥,論音與意在中國傳統上代表的是「英雄」。飛鷹更代表萬里翱翔,有祈求功勛浩大綿長之意。

此犀角杯落有17世紀雕刻大家尤侃之款,主題特出雕工大膽,實乃驚人之作。

尤侃作品知名度高且存檔豐富,載其名之作遠多於其他犀角工匠。犀角杯之中,以鷹為主題者十分罕見,且尤侃作品中未見其他相仿之作。尤侃之款,亦有可能是為向大師致意,而後加於此作上。

據Jan Chapman所述,尤侃於1650-1720年間乃宮廷工匠。他創意多元,手上技藝更是精細而謹慎。他崇尚寫實風格,尤其描繪花鳥時更是如此。他對空間運用得當,並巧妙利用素材天然的紋絡及內含物,使作品富含深意。可參考Jan Chapman著《The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China》,倫敦,1999年,頁139。

尤侃款之犀角杯,有三件以雞為主題者。一藏於北京故宮,錄於前述著作,圖版250,原屬葉義醫生珍藏;一件售於香港佳士得2004年11月1日,拍品編號951;第三件售於紐約蘇富比2007年3月19日,拍品編號373。

與此件最相關作例,為一件無款雕雙鷹之作,巧妙利用素材原始風貌,一鷹棲於松木,另一隻展翅飛翔,雙爪貼身。此作前藏家仇炎之先生道:「唯有一代宗師之手,方能有此精巧細緻卻強而有力之作」,售於香港蘇富比2011年4月8日,拍品編號2718。
