of pear-shape, crisply cast with five bands of interlocking dragons, their bodies defined with hooks, angular S- curves and raised beaded elements, the registers divided by plain bands, flanked on each side of the neck by bold large-horned taotie masks in relief issuing loop handles with large pendent rings, a partially obscured eighteen-character inscription on the interior of the neck, Japanese box (2)

Condition
This vessel is in good condition except for one small vertical crack approximately 1 1/3 in. (3.4 cm) on the lower body. There is old damage on the foot ring.

器中銘文:「陳侯作壺用祈眉壽無疆,子子孫孫永寶是尚」(據容庚《商周彝器通考》1941,北京,圖732,頁440)。此壺首錄於《Bronzes Antiques de la Chine Apartenant à C. T. Loo et Cie》,巴黎,1924年。此圖錄由褚德彝(1871-1942)編著,由法國漢學家伯希和(Paul Pelliot, 1878-1945)作序。褚德彝是晚清重要藏家端方(1861-1911)的幕僚,他有系統地整理了端方的青銅器收藏圖錄《陶齋吉金錄》,於1908年出版。端方所網羅的近代最重要的古物收藏,其中包含一套19世紀於寶雞出土的青銅柉禁和毛公鼎,現分別藏於紐約大都會藝術博物館及台北故宮博物院。1911年端方於四川任職時遭暗殺,逝後,其後代試圖將其收藏一起賣給民國政府;未果。之後其收藏便分散至各私人藏家及行家手中,盧芹齋及山中商會便從中購得為數眾多的藏品,並轉賣給日本和西方藏家及博物館。銘文的前兩行已磨損嚴重,但經容庚的復原可知一概,此壺應為陳侯所製。陳國乃周朝最具影響地位的諸侯國之一,其國君於西周時期多與周朝王室通婚,國土大致為現今的河南東部及安徽。春秋時期,陳國先後與齊國(今山東)、晉國(今山西)及楚國(今河南南部及湖北)交好。陳國的青銅器在風格上,因此同時受到南方及北方的影響。公元前478年,陳國終亡於楚國。現存少數幾件屬陳侯之名的青銅器,1963年於山東省肥城出土一件壺,便是其女的嫁妝。
此壺令人印象深刻,其所呈現的創意風格於西周時期首創,至東周及春秋時期有了更多的發展。立體的帶狀紋飾,鑄造華美精細,蟠龍紋凸起的雙眼更是獨特少有,然卻亦可見於Sackler珍藏的一件缶,錄於Jenny So著《Eastern Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections》卷3,華盛頓 D.C.,1995年,頁206,品號31。此件所表現的主題,代表的是東周鑄銅工匠的新式配飾手法,他們的創造力激發出了紋飾花樣的不斷創新。此件精巧絕倫的龍紋釋放不凡生命力與魄力,同時亦較前期作品更生動立體。春秋早期一件鼎上可見極為相關紋飾設計,現藏煙台博物館,山東省,錄於《中國青銅器全集》卷9,北京,1997年,圖版2,及另一件罍,現藏河北省博物館,錄於前述著作,圖版128。
