the bowl with an everted rim, supported on a tall, slightly spreading hollow foot, painted on the exterior with a scholar on a horse followed by an attendant carrying a qin going to visit friends, with other scholars in a mountainous landscape setting, the interior with a medallion enclosing a scholar by a riverbank within double-line borders, and a band of geometric cross pattern on the interior rim, the interior of the foot rim with a four-character mark in underglaze blue

Collection of Dr. Richard and Mrs. Mary Eckhardt, acquired in Japan between 1947-1952 while Dr. Eckhardt was serving as a surgeon in the United States Army and thence by descent.
Condition
A small piece of the rim has been broken off and split into two sections and re-glued, with a short hairline crack extending from the repair. There is a haircrack to the rim and a gilt-lacquered repaired chip to the exterior of the rim as well as some fritting and burst glaze bubbles around the rim. There is a faint firing flaw visible under the geometric border to the interior. The exterior with a few typical pin pricks, burst glaze bubbles and a glaze gap where the foot meets the bowl, and kiln grit to the interior of the foot.
