A HUANGHUALI SQUARE TABLE (FANGZHUO) LATE MING / EARLY QING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY

the floating panel composed of three boards set within a beaded and mitered frame, above a molded edge and recessed waist and scrolling apron carved within beading with a pair of confronting chilong centered by interlocking foliate scrolls, the rectangular legs joined by a high humped stretcher, the legs terminating in hoof feet, the underside with three transverse braces

The top panel with one full length and three partial splits and some minor shrinkage. the frame and leg joins have been consolidated with glue. One leg with a repair at the join with the apron and another leg with approximately 3 inches of missing beading and one stretcher with a small section reattached near the join with the leg. There is expected wear to the feet. The patina is a nice warm brown color with some slight stains and water damage.

For centuries the square table has been the form of choice for dining, writing, appreciating antiques, or playing games. The high stretcher is well placed to provide strength to the structure while allowing ample room to sit comfortably. Dragons such as those found on this table rarely appear as a motif on the aprons of fangzhuo. Far more common among published examples are those with scrolling vines or undecorated aprons.
