劉煒與方力鈞是「玩世現實主義」中的代表人物，他們不約而同地以游泳作為創作題材，並藉此來表達他們對政治的態度，從無聊及無意義的畫面中，消解政治對他們的意義，無所謂及潑皮的態度是他們面對社會的策略，於九十年代的當代中國藝術中極具代表性。難能可貴的是，今次拍賣的《游泳》創作於一九九四年，有著藝術家親身繪製之畫框，於藝術家的作品中非常罕見。

游泳是藝術家九十年代早期代表參加國際展覽中的主要題材，一九九三年開始創作〈出水芙蓉系列〉，更曾創作多張游泳作品，包括以毛澤東為主題的《水調歌頭》。翌年，他更以一組八張的大型作品〈泳客系列〉及兩張〈戲水美人系列〉參展「聖保羅雙年展」，與獲邀在同一展覽展出游泳系列的方力鈞同場較勁。由此可見，游泳系列於藝術家早年藝術生涯中的重要性，今次拍賣作品屬游泳系列中最早的一批，其重要性更是不言而喻。
