the compressed globular body rising from a splayed circular foot to a raised rim, flanked by a pair of horned mythical animals with angular bodies forming the handles, finely carved in shallow relief around the exterior with taotie masks against an incised leiwen ground, above a band of pendent cicada lappets skirting the base and between key-fret at the rim and foot, the domed cover similarly carved with taotie reserved on leiwen and surmounted by a cupped finial decorated with petal lappets around its centre, the translucent stone of deep spinach-green colour textured with lighter gray and black inclusions, carved wood base

Condition
There are a few nicks around the footring and the cover rim, a minute bruise to the edge of the knop, but overall the censer and cover are in very good condition. A separate piece of spinach jade was used for the inner mouth rim. It appears to be of the period.
