of circular form with straight sides, the flat cover finely carved in shallow relief with four foliate scrolls in the guri style issuing from the border to form a rounded square motif centered by a dot, all thinly outlined in red and extending onto the sides, the base similarly decorated with an undulating xiangcao scroll, the base of plain black lacquer

There are possibly traces of old metal mounts on the rim (showing on the illustration in the catalogue). Sections of the edges of both the box and cover have been slightly restored and retouched. There are some typical age cracks and flakes (some retouched), as well as light scratches, expected wear, and some more pronounced scratches on the underside of the box.
