Bell-Smith identified the Selkirk Mountains in British Columbia as one of his favourite sketching locations. He was an artist from a period that extolled the painting of atmospheric effects. Boulet writes:
In 1888, when the first Rocky Mountain subjects are exhibited, there are many 'cloud effects'...and 'morning mists.' Such titles are very common, and in most cases the paintings are so evocative as to render titles unnecessary. Yet they convey the artist's concern for light and for atmosphere, that concern shared by most artists of that time.
