of typical form, composed of three polychrome enamelled gold plaques, worked in openwork with foliate scrolls, set with emeralds and other blue, red and pink gemstones

Condition

In fairly good condition, hinges between plaques slightly loose, one missing, some minor encrustation to reverse, central emerald with light scratches on surface, as viewed.

'Might is for God and for His Messenger'

The present crown was probably used in wedding ceremonies and would have been worn by both Muslim and Jewish brides. Its characteristic pyramidal shape and rich decoration remained popular into the twentieth century. For a similar, but slightly later example of such a taj, see Mann 2000, no.52, p.152.
