Two Persian quatrains and the date as:  'In the course of the year six hundred and sixty five (1266-7)'

This star tile relates to a group of star and cross tiles associated with the Imamzada Ja'far at Damghan and dated to 664-5 AH/ 1266-7 AD (Watson 1985, p.133, fig.110). It would originally have formed part of an architectural dado and been grouped with other similar tiles.

The lively graphic design can be paralleled in contemporary Ilkhanid book illustration, such as the Manafi al-Hayawan, the illustrated copy of the Bestiary of Ibn Bakhtishu, produced at Maragha in 1298, and now in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York (inv. no. M.500) (see P. Gray, Persian Painting, Geneva, 1961, pp.20-21).
