A LINEN-BOUND HARDCOVER ALBUM CONTAINING A GROUP OF 54 WATERCOLOUR AND GOUACHE PAINTINGS ON PAPER, EACH INSCRIBED CAPTIONS BY CALLIGRAPHY IN CHINESE AND FRENCH, WITH A CLOTH-BOUND BOX.
Condition
The album is in good condition overall. Some evidence of minor wear and handling around the edges of the book are evident. There are slight indications of foxing in several of the pages, and a faint yellowing that is consistent with its ageing process, but overall the condition is ostensibly well-preserved.

Only a few remaining Vietnamese paintings from the late 19th and early 20th century survived under the hands of museums and private collectors. These works are recognition of our past, which continues to remind us the history and culture of Asian Arts.
An important and historical album composed of 54 exceptional gouache and watercolour drawings. Finely painted on paper with a delicate and intricate brush of an official Mandarin painter from the last Nguyen Dynasty of Imperial Vietnam, Nguen Van Nhan. Executed in circa 1902, the perfectly linen-bound album is accompanied by images with beautiful calligraphy in Sino-Vietnamese and French translation. This original piece is a unique subject, which describes the different Royal Court's official ceremonial dresses and the hierarchical order of social classes.
In the first two pages of the album, Nguyen Van Nhan illustrates the Emperor Thanh Thai, the Son of Heaven who reigned from 1889 to 1907, wearing a yellow ceremonial costume for the Nam Giao Ceremony. The artist daintily drew the Emperor sitting on his throne, at the Thai Hoa Palace for a Royal Assembly. The following pages presents the Queen and two concubines, Princes, Dukes, Great Mandarins – known as the Pillars of Empire, Great Civil and Military High Ranking Mandarins of all the Nine Classes, Royal Eunuchs and Palace Servants, Royal Guards, different Royal Corps 's soldiers carrying arms and banners, Royal Cavalry, Elephant Royal's Corp, Royal Musicians and lastly, the Royal River's Corp. The painter had arranged the album by socio-economic classes – the closer the beginning of the book the higher the class hierarchy. These splendid official dresses and uniforms were exquisitely drawn by the Palace's Official Painter, with an accurate sense of detail and colour, hence leaving a referential artistic study and a precious document for this époque.
Page after page, this colorful Imperial procession with its various parades and corteges, offers the viewer a beautiful spectacle of the Vietnamese Imperial Court's last splendors.
