"Each newborn child would be given a name by their parents. Mine was Oh Hong Bun until I was 18 years old. After the presidential cabinet decree in 1966, No 127 / U /Kep /12 /1966, I have to voluntarily change my Chinese name into an Indonesian one. It was a suggestion that was compulsory, because a Chinese name indicates that one is a migrant and therefore not a real Indonesian. The socio-political construct that perceives "real" as good and part of the majority has remained, even until today.
In this work I am acknowledging my heritage and all that it entails. To acknowledge history does not mean living in the past. Recognizing and reminiscing does not mean departing from nationalism. To recollect history in the current political situation is not easy because there will always be opposition, both from within and without. However, I will continue to write and to evoke the memories even after the rain wipes them out, regardless of my obstacles."
