Although famous for its jewelry creation, Cartier was the first to introduce the men's wristwatch.  Patek Philippe made the first wristwatch, but for a woman and as a one-off.  In 1904, the Brazilian pioneer aviator, Alberto Santos-Dumont complained to his friend Louis Cartier of the unreliability and impracticality of using pocket watches while flying. Cartier took the challenge and designed a flat wristwatch with a distinctive square bezel. This watch was not only a hit with Santos-Dumont, but also with many Cartier's upper class clients. Thus, the "Santos" was born and become a symbol of Cartier's timeless modernity.  Cartier also created the deployant buckle in 1910, which is now used by numerous major watch manufacturers worldwide.

Cartier designed the "Santos Triple 100" watch with the first-ever rotating dial mechanism.  It is an exceptional and one-of-a-kind trio of watches. By simply turning the winding crown, the watch reveals a gripping display of its hidden faces, either a classic dial with Roman numerals, sparkling pave diamond and sapphire-set chessboard-style pattern, or a meticulously engraved tiger's head.  The heart of this Santos features a finely skeletonized manual winding movement caliber 9610MC, with double barrels offering a 72-hour power reserve, specifically developed by the Cartier Manufacture. This timepiece was produced in a very limited series of 20 pieces and the current example is number 16.  It has never been offered at auction, providing a rare opportunity for the most avid Cartier connoisseurs.
