the exterior of the shallow rounded sides carved with dense lotus flower scrolls below a loose band of bats, all above a formal archaistic scroll encircling the base, the top set with a wide flat everted rim carved with a floral scroll border reserved on a key-fret ground, the underside incised with various floral sprays including lotus, rose, prunus, lily and peony, the interior of the basin left undecorated, the flat base covered in a lustrous layer of black lacquer
Condition
There are some typical age cracks and chips, especialling to the exterior. The cinnabar-lacquered interior and the black-lacquered base have some stains and surface scratches. The red border circling the base has been re-lacquered.
