Born in 1965, after graduating from National Taiwan Academy of Arts, Chang Chia-ting has been renowned for her still life paintings since the 1990s. She has held many solo and group exhibitions at the Taipei Museum of Fine Arts and the Art Museum of Beijing Fine Art Academy. She has been gaining recognition in the art scene through her paintings. Director of Art Museum of Beijing Fine Art Academy Shang Hui once said: "Chang Chia-ting's flower paintings show not only her strong depth of feeling on life, but also demonstrate and reveal her own life experience."

Flower Picking was completed in 1997. In this phase of her artistic creation, Chang tends to let the figures become an important object in the composition, giving her work an air of novelty. In the soft-coloured background, the leading figure is standing in a contemplative state, lending the work a dreamy and mysterious atmosphere. The artist's use of extensive brushstrokes and the markings from her palette knife can be seen clearly in this painting. This work transmits the viewer a light-hearted rhythm flowing throughout its composition with its palette and technique.
