Wax Apple and Melon was completed in Guo Bochuan's mature period, in which he focuses more on colour than on details in his work. Guo transfers his own feelings and emotions to objects he paints, using bold brushstrokes and bright red, pink and blue commonly used in Chinese folk festivals to create blurred effects on paper and exquisitely and vividly present the wax apples, the melon and the litchi in the painting. Guo is the best artist in China who masters the technique to create blurred effects on paper with oil paints. In addition to the use of colour, he is also skilled in using lines to paint light effects on objects. He depicts the bright red vase with his fluid brushstrokes and adds a few simple touches to give it a glossy and iridescent look. The elegant contour of the vase is reminiscent of the implicit and elegant traditional Chinese ceramic vases. The round and curved bottom and mouth of the vase reveal the aesthetics of Chinese calligraphy, expressing a unique national style in Guo's art.
