The offered lot was executed in the heyday of the Yusupov porcelain enterprise and is a superlative example of work produced under the artistic directorship of August Philipp Lambert (d. 1835).  In 1822, Nikolai Yusupov invited this French painter from the Sèvres Porcelain Factory to his workshop. Lambert was excellent not only at porcelain painting but also was familiar with the production process. Under his leadership, the number of masters doubled, the range of subjects for porcelain paintings extended, pieces started being marked on the bottom and technology was continuously refined.
The inspiration for the portrait of the Empress was possibly drawn from the lithograph by N. Kolpakov after a drawing by G. Kozlov. The original painting was commissioned by the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1762 on the occasion of the coronation of the Empress.
