The Modern & Post-War British Art Day Sale comprises of Two Sessions.
Session 1 : Howard Hodgkin: Working on Paper – 12 JUNE 2pm (Lots 201-290)
Session 2: Modern & Post-War British Art Day Sale – 13 JUNE 10.30am (Lots 501-592)
Howard Hodgkin: Working on Paper will reveal the scope, diversity and ultimately the great passion Hodgkin had for working on paper. Alongside stage designs for the Royal Ballet and Mark Morris Dance Group, commissions for projects such as the 2012 Olympic poster and book covers for his friends Julian Barnes and Susan Sontag, the auction will include a significant proportion of dazzling prints from the 1960s up to some of the last works he produced. All the works in the sale are from Howard’s personal collection – each print is an Artist’s Proof and all the unique works are those that he retained in the studio.
Proceeds from the sale will fund a complete collection of Hodgkin’s graphic work to be given to a museum, as well as supporting a new edition of the artist’s Catalogue Raisonné, which will feature 189 prints and many unique works on paper.
Celebrating the very best in the British Art Scene over the past century, Sotheby’s Modern & Post-War British Art Day Sale is led by an exciting array of fresh-to-market works by some of the most successful and sought-after artists and sculptors of the past century. The sale will feature important works by the likes of Ben Nicholson, Henry Moore, Dame Barbara Hepworth, Sir Winston Churchill, Ivon Hitchens, William Roberts and L.S. Lowry.
