It all begins in Brussels, in the aftermath of World War II. A young couple befriends the artists of a soaring movement: CoBrA. It is from the likes of Pierre Alechinsky, Christian d’Otremont, Karel Appel or Asger Jorn that Mister Z acquires these decisive works, representative of their day and of a sprawling Brussels. He will first complete his collection with pop flavoured paintings by Valerio Adami, and later with a series of projects completed by Christo in the 1980s. Amongst the contemporary works which constitute the Z collection, one also finds Antonio Saura’s majestic Annie dans son fauteuil. The strength and specificity of this collection are the mirror of the man who assembled it, piece by piece. It is an ensemble of works which is open to the world, relevant and harmonious in its combination of contemporary as well as African and Oceanic objects. This winter, Sotheby’s is honoured to present the Z Collection.
