張大千與徐悲鴻:那段關於牛的友誼

說到牛,大家可能都曾嘲弄過住新界的朋友,稱呼他們為「新界牛」,又或是想起美味的和牛。張大千對牛的想法又可能與我們有點不同,這幅 〈放牧圖〉正是因畫中的牛觸發他思起故友徐悲鴻。

徐悲鴻與張大千早於一九二九年結交,二人惺惺相惜,交情深厚。縱使徐悲鴻以畫馬聞名,張大千卻認為其筆下寫牛同樣出色,數百年來無人能及。徐悲鴻為首批到法國留學的畫家,主張以中國水墨畫融入西洋的技法,著重光影線條和造型結構以改良國畫,所畫之物皆唯肖唯妙。張大千曾效法徐悲鴻的畫法,獲其大讚。四九年後,兩人各有去向,再會無期。

張大千〈放牧圖〉(局部)

一九七九年,張大千以寥寥數筆勾畫牛的形態,與放牧童子一同席地而坐,營造閒適之態。畫上題「恨不令古人見之,擲筆慨然」,可見下筆時憶起舊時,滿懷對故友思念之情。
