			<video:title>Timeless Korean Moon Jar</video:title>
<video:description>Universally admired for its luminous white porcelain surface, elegant, gravity-defying proportions, and charming idiosyncrasies, the evocatively named moon jar (dalhangari) epitomizes the nuanced, natural beauty acclaimed in Korean ceramics. Completely unique to Korea, moon jars were produced for a short amount of time during the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) in the 17th and 18th centuries, likely for storage of grain or liquid. The jar’s deceptively simple form, plain surface, and striking materiality led to its “rediscovery” in the 20th century by art historians and artists alike. Indeed, the term “moon jar” is a modern moniker attributed to the Korean artist Kim Whan-ki (1913-1974), coined around the 1940s when Kim and other artists wrote lyrically about the vessel. In the Joseon period, it was simply referred to as a “large white ceramic jar” or “round jar” (wonho 圓壺).[1] From its humble beginnings as a utilitarian vessel, the moon jar has transcended geographic and cultural boundaries to become one of the most iconic and influential works of art in modern times, equally significant in the history of Korean ceramics, the development of modern studio pottery, and global art history.</video:description>

<video:title>When Women Ruled China: Empress Cixi's Power in Porcelain</video:title>
<video:description>This season’s Important Chinese Art auction will feature an impressive array of porcelains. The Levy Collection is one of the most comprehensive private collections encompassing important specimens of late Qing imperial porcelains. This collection is even more intriguing because it is a woman collector’s endeavor of assembling works commissioned by another woman, a womanly bond between the late Barbara Levy (1938-2021) and Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908). Cixi was the most powerful woman and controversial political figure in recent Chinese history. Her regency stretched over four decades, and she was the foremost patroness of late Qing court art, including porcelains. These porcelains’ dazzling colors, delicate decorations, and ambitious scales are the materialization of this formidable woman’s persona. Cixi’s sensibility in fashion, beauty, and refinement did not go unnoticed. It was appreciated by Levy a century after Cixi’s passing.</video:description>

			<video:title>Spotlight | Collection François Meyer</video:title>
<video:description>François Meyer (1953 – 2022) was a lifelong collector, whose all-encompassing passion and curiosity for art led to him assembling an eclectic collection – whilst at the same time documenting the artists behind it. François Meyer’s collecting journey was inextricably linked with his own creativity, as he photographed some of the best-known and best-loved artists of his time, including Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Sonia Delaunay, Helen Frankenthaler, Wilfredo Lam, Sam Francis, Shirin Neshat, Fernando Botero and David Hockney, to name a few. This September, Sotheby’s Paris will hold a dedicated auction of François Meyer’s personal collection, offering artworks from the breadth of his prolific passions. Prior to the sale, which is titled Collection François Meyer: A Colorful Passion, the 160 works will be exhibited to the public in Sotheby’s Paris galleries from 22 – 25 September.</video:description>

<video:title>An Exceptional and Massive Zitan 'Dragon' Compound Cabinet, Qing Dynasty, Kangxi Period</video:title>
<video:description>Standing at a staggering height of 3.7m, the 2.1m wide compound cabinet is possibly the largest and most magnificent piece of early Imperial Qing furniture to come to market. Constructed with panels made entirely from zitan wood, this massive cabinet features superbly carved imagery of dragons soaring through clouds, all powerfully executed in deep layers of relief, symbolising imperial presence and power. Such a tour-de-force masterpiece could only have been designed and crafted by the most skilled artisans employed by the Muzuo or Wood Workshop, one of the Palace Workshops (Zaobanchu) that operated under the command of the Imperial Household Department (Neiwufu) of the Qing court. The different components of the cabinet were separated from at least the first half of the 20th century in Europe and are finally offered together for the first time on the market since at least the 1940s.</video:description>

			<video:title>Handcraft Heritage</video:title>
<video:description>This season for the Hong Kong Autumn Sales 2023, Important Watches I presents a captivating selection of timepieces to celebrate the exquisite handcrafts from Patek Philippe. This selection of watches highlights the arts of watchmaking and this is best exemplified by the mesmerising enamel dials, including the "Papillon" and "Owl" by the most celebrated enamellist Anita Porchet, or the pocket watch including a Bacchus and Venus scene by the famous Madame Hélène May-Mercier, regarded as one of the best enamellers in history. This in turn leads to a selection of grand complicated pocket- and wristwatches that illustrate the most complex and sophisticated horological craftmanship from Patek Philippe, with a spectacular yellow gold keyless clock watch that includes a grande and petetie sonnerie minute repeater, as well as a perpetual calendar and a split seconds chronograph.
Discover these spectacular timepieces on 7 October 2023.</video:description>

			<video:title>Le miroir universel </video:title>
<video:description>Le miroir universel originated from Magritte’s La magie noire (1934) series, becoming a painting that portrayed the naked form of his wife Georgette Berger leaning against a rock as she metamorphoses from the waist upwards into the cerulean blue sky. Magritte’s vision of Georgette as a modern Venus of the night sky brings together the intimate and the infinite, achieving the impossible expression of a dream turned into a thought.</video:description>

<video:title>Verdant Mountains of Summer Spirit </video:title>
<video:description>This autumn, Sotheby’s Hong Kong is set to unveil more than 230 modern Chinese paintings and calligraphy in our Fine Chinese Paintings Sale. Among remarkable collections, a true focal point is the masterpiece "Verdant Mountains of Summer Spirit", painted by the master Zhang Daqian in May 1968. This artwork is characterized by its audacious use of vibrant blue and green hues and its fluidity, creating a breathtaking landscape of majestic mountains and misty vistas. Its mesmerizing layering and vivid brilliance deliver a powerful visual experience. Notably, this piece was originally part of the esteemed collection of Cornelius Vander Starr (1892-1968), a titan in worldwide insurance industry, and later bestowed upon his trusted associate K.K. Tse (1907-1998). Nestled within the lush emerald palette are pavilions, ancient temples, and meandering streams, imbuing an Eastern allure to the abstract work.</video:description>

<video:title>The hypnotic appeal of ancient Zen teabowls</video:title>
<video:description>Tenmoku (tianmu) bowls have been used in Japan since medieval times for zen meditation in temples and aristocratic homes. The abstract aesthetic appeal of these teabowls, reminiscent of spacescapes, and the depth of their ultra black glazes rendered them perfect for ritual tea drinking. We are proud to present this season the most beautiful line up of heirloom Tenmoku bowls ever to come to market, all passed down from prestigious aristocratic families and temples in Japan.</video:description>

<video:description>This spectacular massive jade bi and its magnificent bronze stand would have once stood outside an important hall in the Forbidden City. The only counterpart known cut from the same stone with a bronze ‘dragon’ stand cast in the exact same style and of the same size still stands precisely positioned in the central axis facing the Yangxindian. The present massive jade bi and its counterpart in the Yangxindian are the two largest bi discs extant in the world, powerfully representing Heaven and imperial authority as bi discs are believed to have symbolised Heaven since the Eastern Zhou and Han dynasties. The current jade bi once graced the collection of a European royal family for around half a century between the late 1950s and early 2010s.</video:description>

<video:title>An outstanding and possibly unique famille-rose and doucai moon flask, Seal mark and period of Yongzheng </video:title>
<video:description>The present moon flask draws inspiration from masterpieces from the absolute peak periods of China’s porcelain production, from the Yongle (1403-1424) and Chenghua (1465-1487) reigns, and yet represents a unique design, firmly anchored in the Yongzheng period (1723-1735). Superbly enamelled in the famille-rose and doucai palettes, the remarkable flask is possibly unique and its only comparable vessel appears to be the renowned smaller famille-rose moon flask in the Sir Percival David Collection in the British Museum, London. This current flask is an exceptional example and would have most likely been produced by the same potters and painters as the Percival David flask.</video:description>

<video:title>An Extremely Rare Blue-Ground Falangcai 'Dragon' Bowl, Blue-Enamel Mark and Period of Qianlong </video:title>
<video:description>Exquisitely enamelled by master court enamellers within the confines of the Forbidden City in Beijing, the large bowl would once have been an object of pure delight for the Emperor and kept in the major palace halls of Qianqinggong and Yangxindian. Having once formed a pair with its counterpart, which is now preserved in the Musée Guimet, Paris, it is the only one of this design in private hands. The superbly rendered kui dragons on the bowl hark back to the late Shang dragon motifs, and the spatial arrangement of the dragons echoes that of floral bowls developed during the Kangxi reign, illustrating the Qianlong Emperor’s fondness of the glorious legacy of China’s cultural heritage as well as his grandfather, the Kangxi Emperor.</video:description>

<video:title>The Leshantang Collection – Treasures of Chinese Art from the Tsai I-Ming Collection</video:title>
<video:description>The Leshantang collection formed by Tsai I-Ming offers a unique perspective on the tastes, perceptions and connoisseurship of an individual, as it brings together works from across the history of art in a dialogue that enriches each of them. Imperial porcelain stood at the genesis of Tsai I-ming’s collecting journey, which impressively lasted close to half a century. Far from being driven by an investment mindset, the assemblage of the Leshantang collection was a deeply personal and visceral journey steeped in anecdotal gems lying behind every acquisition, and one such notable example was his purchase of Zhang Daqian’s Dragon Maiden Worshipping Buddha at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in 1981, which led him on a quest to meet Zhang Daqian himself to discuss the hitherto unseen striking red pigments in the painting. To honor the semicentennial partnership between the Tsai family and Sotheby's, part of the Leshantang Collection will be showcased in Sotheby’s Autumn Sale 2023 on 8 October, 2023.</video:description>

			<video:title>Modigliani's final portrait</video:title>
<video:description>Interviewed for a little-known French television documentary in 1991, the elderly Paulette Jourdain recalled with great clarity the circumstances surrounding the creation, some 70 years earlier, of one of Modigliani’s last, great works of portraiture – her portrait, this portrait – rendered at the height of Modigliani’s storied career, so tragically cut short by his untimely death aged 35 just a few months later. A first hand witness to his last days, Paulette claimed ‘I am his last model, his last brushtroke’, remembering as if it were yesterday the sessions she spent modelling for him, first in swiftly executed drawings and later in paint, ennobled on a large scale canvas by the enigmatic artist she had first met at the apartments of the avant-garde dealer, Leopold Zborowski. With a memorable smile, Paulette described Modigliani’s working methods, how he recited Baudelaire and sang from Verdi operas; how he had gone about his task with such happiness – recollections made all the more poignant in her memory given that soon after, she would be tasked with assisting with his interment and caring for Jeanne Hebuterne, the artists inconsolable, pregnant wife. Despite the intervening years, Paulette had preserved a corner of her apartment as a shrine to the memory of this seminal period of her life, replete with sepia tone photographs and torn reproductions of the artists of the Ecole de Paris that she had known so well – and at its core, a reproduction of this, the present painting, flanked by its chief protagonists – Modigliani the artist, Jourdain the model – testimony to a relationship that had fused to create a masterpiece that would long outlast their short but memorable encounter.</video:description>

<video:title>Shakyamuni - A Masterpiece of Imperial Buddhist Art for the Yongle Emperor</video:title>
<video:description>This exceptional statue of Shakyamuni Buddha dating back to the Yongle period in the early 15th century, stands as a masterpiece that has remained in pristine condition. It retains its separately made throne and Arch of Glory, along with the beautifully prepared scrolls and inscribed tablets used during the statue’s consecration ceremony. The iconographic form which depicts the historical Buddha seated with his right hand in the earth-touching position, bhumisparsha mudra, recalls a momentous episode from his spiritual biography in which he triumphs over Mara just prior to his enlightenment. This remarkable sculpture, of immense importance at the time of its casting and among the heirlooms of subsequent emperors, appears to have been lavishly and prominently depicted in the illustrious albums of Wisdom Sutra commissioned by the Xuande Emperor. There is no doubt that this sculpture ranks among the largest and most important gilt bronze Buddhist sculptures in private hands.</video:description>
