Description

A fine presentation copy, inscribed by Eliot a month after publication to the French novelist and playwright. Duhamel was a surgeon during the First World War and his work is noted for his compassionate accounts of human suffering. His later essays, collected in Scènes de la vie future (1930, published in English as America: the Menace in 1931) reflect his aversion to over-industrialization.

The Confidential Clerk was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival between 25 August and 1 September 1953, before transferring for a respectable run at the Lyric Theatre in London.
