Attributed to Mary Godfrey (d. 1841), the daughter of James Godfrey and Anstis Sayer (c. 1747- 1830) of Newport. With her sisters Anstis and Abby, Mary kept a Newport girls' school noted for fine embroidery.
The school existed from 1811-1837 and was located on the corner of Thames Street and Long Wharf. They taught sewing, both plain and fancy, and fine embroidery. Mary had been the preceptress of Bristol Academy in Taunton, Massachusetts from 1799-1800. (Additional information provided by Carol and Stephen Huber).
