Description

Anupam Sud explores psychological tensions between men, woman and society. In her work, Sud uses her figures to draw our attention to the human condition. Sud’s interest in painting clothed and unclothed humans began after returning to India from London where she studied printmaking at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1971.

Her work has also evolved in phases, in the mid-1970s they resembled architectural forms, limbs and human figures but later it consisted of largely feminist subjects. In this painting, a nude man is holding a kite in his hands with an angel floating in the background. The skin and flesh is rendered with well-delineated contours and the emphasis is on the use of shadows created with a chiaroscuro effect. The artist is well known for her treatment in developing light and dark through her varied mediums; a lot of her works are a synthesis of intaglio and mixed media.
