Description
The style of the present drawing is close to the one of Giulio Parigi, architect, etcher and designer for festivities in Florence. Parigi was a pupil of Bernardo Buontalenti (c.1531-1608), and from about 1580 he worked for the Medici court, especially as director of court festivities. The present sheet appears to be a frontispiece and both inscriptions are added later, in two different stages.
We are grateful to Paul Taylor who suggested that these ensemble of allegorical figures with Sapientia divina, Terra and Mare, the latter clearly represented by Neptune, and the shield with the cross at the center, would suit a commission related to the Order of St. John.1
