Provenance

Aldersbach Abbey until 1803;
Private collection in Germany and thence by descent

The Cistercian Abbey of Aldersbach in the valley of the Vils in Lower Bavaria was founded in 1127 by St. Otto of Bamberg. The Abbey was suppressed on 1st April 1803 and the buildings sold with the library to become part of the National Library at Munich.

Description

This finely and intricately carved relief appears to be partly inspired by the Dürer engraving of the Visitation of 1503-4, in particular with regards to the stance of Ss. Elizabeth and Zacharias. The beautifully carved billowing and exagerated drapery indicate a sculptor in the following of the Nuremberg sculptor Veit Stoss.
