Provenance

Lieutenant-General Sir James Hartigan (1876-1962)

Description

Lozano was born in Manila, the son of the lighthouse keeper at Manila Bay and grew up in Sampaloc just outside Intramuros. By the 1840s he was established as the city’s leading painter and was described as 'a watercolourist without rival' by a local commentator Rafael Diaz Arenas as early as 1850.

This rare set of watercolours once belonged to Lieutenant-General Sir James Hartigan (1876-1962), who travelled extensively throughout his career in the British army and who may have acquired them while in the east.
