Description

The present work depicts Tra Ban beach at low tide looking across the Sound of Iona to Mull. Cadell visited Iona most summers from 1912, depicting the North End of the island in particular in all its myriad guises, according to the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. The island offered an inexhaustible supply of subjects for the artist and each day he would find a new vista to paint or return to a favourite spot to capture the ever changing weather and light. T.J. Honeyman, champion of the Colourists, considered Cadell's Iona series to be the archetypal works of the genre.
