Description

Venice played an important role in Callow's life. He first visited the 'floating city' in the summer of 1840, then returned six years later while on honeymoon and continued to travel there regularly until 1892, when was he in his 80th year.

The present view is a fine example of his watercolour technique of the 1850s and he exhibited this work at the Society of Painters in Water-colour in 1857. Here, Callow stands on the Dogana, looking north-west across the mouth of the Grand Canal, towards the Doge's Palace and St Mark's Square.
