The compositions of both paintings derive from original works by Watteau. The former derives, in reverse and with some differences, from Watteau's Les Plaisirs du bal in London, Dulwich Picture Gallery. The latter dervies, with minor differences, from a lost painting by Watteau known only through engravings (see G. Macchia, Watteau, Milan 1962, p. 99, cat. no. 62 and p. 113, cat. no. 164).
These two panels appear to be by the same hand as a panel, of similar dimensions, sold Olympia, Sotheby's, 24 April 2007, lot 525.
