Description

Discussing a similar painting by the same name from 1966, Arturo Schwarz notes: "...in Birth of a Leaf... the same anthropomorphic intent is at work: the green leaf is depicted in a fetus-like position, placed in an irregularly-shaped dark oval which is at the center of a multi-faceted field of flesh and sky colors... The very term 'birth' is loaded with transcendental significance; it brings to mind the moment when a new form, a new idea, comes to life; the time when an expectation is fulfilled, as is the case in the birth of a dream - for instance, 'next year in Jerusalem' - that comes true. The leaf, the breathing organ of a plant, might also stand for Israel, while the birth of the leaf might equally take us back to the birth of the State which indeed constituted a breathing space for the Jewish people." (Arturo Schwarz in "The Land of Israel", Mordechai Ardon: The Colors of Time, Tel Aviv Museum of Art and The Israel Museum Jerusalem, 2003, p. 31).
