"Thiebaud found a direction that allowed him true freedom and began working in his studio, freely juxtaposing landscape elements made from sketches of different sites. Thus, released from the tyranny of rendering a particular view, he could build up images that retained the basic elements of San Francisco's landscapes but freed him from the constraints of exact representation. In his own words he could 'take a piece here and a piece there and organize it like a stage. Working with specific information I can...manage the landscape.'"
