Description

Daniel Vosmaer painted a number of versions of this same view, showing the aftermath of the great explosion of 12th October 1654, which destroyed much of Delft and killed many people, though none of those known today shares exactly the same staffage and other compositional details seen in this drawing.  We have no other drawings securely attributed to the artist with which we can compare the present sheet, but the attribution to Vosmaer should not necessarily be discounted.
