Description

This pair of portrait drawings, late 18th or early 19th century in origin, but copies of 17th century originals were thought, by Jacob Ernst Marcus, to have been "na een schilderij van Van der Werff". The reappearance of the original pair of oil paintings, depicting the Amsterdam merchant, Jacob van der Merckt and his wife Petronella Witsen (1602-1676), initially in 19951 and subsequently in these rooms in 2013,2 allows us to clarify that the present pair of drawings are, in fact, after Hendrick Gerritsz. Pot (1585-1657).
