Description

In this work, Loiseau captures the crisp atmosphere of a winter's day in the French countryside. An expansive sky extends across the canvas over a riverbank that, despite the season, is far from barren. Its rich surface, composed of spontaneous brushwork and areas of thickly applied paint, exemplifies the artist's instinctive use of Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist techniques which he derived from his close relationship with Claude Monet (see fig. 1). In Gelée blanche, Loiseau eliminates almost every sign of human presence, choosing instead to focus on the extraordinarily dramatic possibilities of nature itself.
